Promotional USB Drive
USB stands for Universal Serial Bus.
The USB came about in November 1995. It was developed by major companies that included DEC, IBM®, Intel®, Microsoft®, and Compaq. This was long before it was considered as a Promotional USB drive.
USB uses a tiered star topology, meaning that USB devices called hubs can serve as connection ports for other USB devices.
USB 1.1 had two data rates: 12 Mbps for high-speed throughput devices (disk drives) and 1.5 Mbps for lower bandwidth devices (joysticks). USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed USB 2.0), introduced in 2002, increased the peripheral-to-PC speed to 480 Mbps. Besides offering extremely high-speed throughput to external devices, it also enhances the performance of Web applications that may need multiple high-speed devices to run simultaneously.
A USB peripheral simply plugs into a port and works without installing a card or powering the computer down (USB devices are hot-swappable). Although a separate power supply is usually not necessary for a USB device, it must be attached upstream to either the host PC or a powered hub. In USB, configuration occurs automatically. Host controllers manage driver software, bandwidth, and appropriate electrical power. USB controllers also have improved the performance of game control devices (joysticks, and so on) by eliminating the loss of calibration ("drift") due to cable length and CPU overhead -- USB effectively reduces CPU overhead.
There are four types of USB connectors: Type A, Type B, Mini B, and Mini A.
October 2005 - Students started getting their year's class materials in a new way: on USB Flash Drives. These "digital backpacks" can hold textbooks, novels, homework assignments, a dictionary, graphing-calculator software and many more educational resources.
November 2005 - The popular Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies recently came to CustomUSB.com looking to make history. They have now become the first mainstream band in the world to release material on USB Flash Drives. "Barenaked on a Stick," the 128MB USB Flash Drive (right) contains 29 songs, including "Barenaked for the Holidays," a few live versions of fan favourites, as well as photos, chat-buddy icons and a video.
When Toyota recently used the USB drive as a promotional tool for its 2006 Lexus RX 350 sports utility vehicle in a U.S. mass mailing, it didn't print up glossy brochures and cram them into bulky envelopes. Instead, it sent out 21,000 digital devices smaller than cigarette lighters.
While some recipients may have been confused at first, they surely caught on when they pulled off a plastic cap and found a familiar Universal Serial Bus plug. Sticking the plug into a computer USB port, they gained access to the device and its contents: RX 350 pictures, video clips, interactive demos and more. Lexus isn't the only company that is handing out such Promotional USB gizmos — which go by such names as thumb drive; pen drive, pocket hard drive and USB flash drive — like candy.
The storage devices, which keep digital data in non-mechanical “flash” memory, have displaced the venerable floppy diskette as a convenient means for transporting and distributing computer files. As a result, the flash drives have become popular among companies that distribute promotional materials by mail, at industry gatherings or in meetings to clinch deals. On of the key advantage of the USB is that they can be reused. Once recipients have perused the devices' contents, they're free to use the drives for their own files.
Promotional USB drive or Flash drives are becoming the new darlings of conventions and trade shows, largely because of their increasing ubiquity and affordability. About 30 million were sold worldwide last year, including about 5 million in the United States.
The Promotional USB drive or Promotional Flash drive are widely used in the promotional industry, from web keys, (that can just hold your web link), USB Hub Connector, USB Memory Stick, USB Torch, Compact USB Flash Drive, USB Phone Charger, USB Pen Drive, USB Hub, USB Light, USB Fan, USB Hub Mousemat, USB Laser Pointer, USB Flash cam, USB key chain, USB Memo holder, USB laptop set, USB extension cord, USB Scan Radio, USB Travel Kit, Twister USB, Tag USB, Flip USB, Baby Twister USB, Rubber USB, Leather USB, Pod USB and the most popular Aluminium USB. The can include a logo from 1 colour up to 4 colour process, or engraving. There are also various boxes and Flash drive accessories. Production of the Promotional USB drive is now mainly in the Far East, with China fastly becoming one of the main flash drive manufacturers. The Promotional USB drive normally goes from 64mb up to 1024mb.
